Joan Mir and Luca Marini Return as Honda Regroups for Sepang
Event / announcement: October 29, 2026

Honda's factory garage will finally have both of its regular riders back this weekend. Joan Mir returns at the Malaysian Grand Prix after missing the Japanese, Indonesian and Australian rounds through illness, and Luca Marini is expected to line up after a virus ended his Phillip Island weekend almost before it started. For a team that left Australia with no factory bike on track after the first practice session, Sepang is a fresh start.
Honda confirmed Mir's return on 27 October, saying doctors had cleared him and that he had done some riding on different bikes during the previous week. Speaking at Sepang on Thursday, the 2020 world champion gave the most detailed account yet of what kept him away.
Mir explains his absence
Mir told reporters that he had suffered vision problems and what he called "extreme" fatigue. He said his energy was already low during the San Marino weekend in September, and that the following weeks were difficult because nobody could give him a clear answer about what was happening or when it would end. "It was honestly very hard to understand the timings," he said.
Early treatments did not work. Mir said the turning point came after treatment from MotoGP medical chief Dr Angel Charte, after which he could "see immediately that I was improving". He combined that with substantial recovery work at home before returning to riding last week. "I still have some question marks, but I feel good," he said.
In Honda's announcement he thanked those close to him for helping him stay focused, adding: "It hasn't been an easy period." He also noted that Sepang was the scene of his most recent podium, and said the priority was simple: "The most important point of the weekend is to get back on the bike, reconnect with the team and check my feeling." His manager, meanwhile, has criticised the way some of the reporting around the illness was handled during his absence.
A chain of replacements
Mir's absence set off a run of problems for HRC. Somkiat Chantra stood in at Motegi, but was unavailable for Australia because he was testing for Honda's WorldSBK project at Jerez. Aleix Espargaro took the seat at Mandalika, but withdrew on the Sunday morning because of physical discomfort, and Crash.net later reported that he had withdrawn from Australia because of chronic exertional compartment syndrome, with surgery planned in Barcelona. Takaaki Nakagami, another option, broke a collarbone while wildcarding at Motegi.
- Japanese GP: Somkiat Chantra replaced Mir.
- Indonesian GP: Aleix Espargaro replaced Mir but withdrew before the race.
- Australian GP: no replacement for Mir; Marini was ruled out by a virus after FP1.
- Malaysian GP: Mir and Marini both expected back, subject to medical checks.
By Phillip Island, Honda had run out of options. Marini was the only factory rider entered, and then a virus ruled him out after only a couple of laps. When qualifying came around, HRC had no riders at all on track. The Australian Grand Prix was eventually cancelled by bad weather, but the image of an empty factory garage summed up an unlucky autumn.
Marini's road back
Marini said this week that he has been focused on recovery since the Friday in Australia. "Unfortunately we couldn't do more than a couple of laps in Phillip Island," he said. He has returned to the gym, but noted that a MotoGP bike "is always something different", and expects Sepang's heat, humidity and physical demands to require a different approach. He still has to pass the pre-event medical check, though he said: "I don't think it will be a problem."
Marini has been remarkably durable during his premier-class career, missing only five races since he stepped up in 2021. Before Australia he described the final run of rounds as "five chances to show all that we have achieved together these past years". With the Phillip Island race lost, those chances are now four at most, depending on what happens with Qatar.
The end of an era at HRC
These final rounds are a farewell for both riders. Mir is joining Gresini Ducati for 2027, while Marini moves to Tech3 KTM. Honda has already confirmed its line-up for the 850cc era: Fabio Quartararo and Diogo Moreira in the factory team, with Johann Zarco and David Alonso at LCR. That gives Mir and Marini a slightly unusual task. They are developing nothing for themselves beyond the end of the year, yet their feedback still matters to a project trying to finish 2026 strongly.
For Mir, the target is more personal. A rider who won the world title in 2020 has spent much of his Honda career fighting the bike and, this season, his own body. Getting through a full weekend at a demanding, hot circuit would be a meaningful step. The medical review after Friday practice will tell whether his body is ready for more.
- Mir's last podium came at Sepang, which he described as a good place to restart.
- Both riders must pass the medical checks before the weekend.
- Forecasts point to a risk of thunderstorms throughout the Sepang event.
- Sepang is the second race of a triple-header that is due to end in Qatar.
For local fans heading to Sepang this weekend, Honda's return to full strength is a small story compared with the title fight between Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin. But for a factory that has spent a month patching together a line-up, simply having two familiar faces in the garage again counts as progress.
How to read the next chapter
The result or announcement in Joan Mir and Luca Marini Return as Honda Regroups for Sepang should be placed in the full MotoGP weekend rather than judged on a headline alone. Practice conditions, qualifying position and tyre choice all shape the opportunities available in a sprint or Grand Prix. A rider starting from the front may have a clear line into the first corner; another may spend laps working through traffic despite comparable underlying pace. Compare the official classification with the race sequence before deciding which performance was strongest. A fall, technical problem or penalty can change points without proving a rider suddenly lost speed.
