Giannis Antetokounmpo made his first media day appearance as a member of the Miami Heat on Monday, 28 September, and his message was simple. After 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and a July trade that reshaped the Eastern Conference, the two-time MVP said his priority is winning championships rather than chasing individual recognition.

“I don’t care about being the best. I care about being a winner,” Antetokounmpo said, according to WFLX. He explained that he would rather show his children championship trophies than rankings. Yet he also made clear that he still believes in his ability to dominate. “I really do believe that I can dominate the game and impact it both offensively and defensively,” he said.

Settling into a new home

Antetokounmpo admitted that the change still feels strange. According to Hoops Rumors, he said he is “in a very, very good place” but that the move is “still weird” after so long in Milwaukee. He described Miami as “a culture that fits my personality”, a nod to the Heat’s famously demanding approach to conditioning and work ethic.

When asked whether he still sees himself as the league’s best player, he did not hesitate. “Yes. If not the best, I’m one of the best players in the world,” he said, according to Hoops Rumors. The two statements are not contradictory: Antetokounmpo is confident in his level, but he measures success by team results.

Fire meeting fire with Bam Adebayo

The partnership with Bam Adebayo is the foundation of Miami’s plan. The two were rivals for years, meeting in memorable playoff series between the Heat and Bucks. Now they will share the floor. “It’s fire meeting fire,” Antetokounmpo said. “If I guard Bam every day at practice, when he goes against any player in the league, it would be much harder.”

Adebayo made a similar point, saying that elite players push each other and make each other better, according to Hoops Rumors. Antetokounmpo also called him “one of the best two-way players in the league”, praise that reflects how much the Heat’s defensive identity depends on Adebayo’s versatility.

  • Two versatile bigs who can both handle the ball and defend multiple positions.
  • Spoelstra plans to use both players as offensive “hubs”, according to WFLX.
  • Spacing will be the main tactical puzzle, since neither is a high-volume shooter.
  • Defensively, the pairing could be among the most disruptive in the league.

Spoelstra’s vision

Erik Spoelstra framed the overhaul as a deliberate change of direction. According to Hoops Rumors, the head coach called it “the appropriate time to try something new” and said the goal was to help Antetokounmpo “establish himself in that conversation of the best player in the league”. Miami, he added, did not bring him in “to take a step back.”

WFLX reported that Spoelstra intends to use Antetokounmpo and Adebayo as hubs, meaning the offence can run through either player. That approach plays to their passing ability and allows Miami to vary their attack. It also places a premium on surrounding them with shooters who can punish defences that collapse into the paint.

Klay Thompson and the supporting cast

One of those shooters is Klay Thompson, who has joined the Heat and reunites with Andrew Wiggins, his teammate on Golden State’s 2022 championship team. Spoelstra praised the pair. “They shared something amazing and beautiful that we’re trying to get here,” he said, adding that “what Klay has done in this league should be celebrated.”

The price was steep. According to NBA.com’s offseason trade tracker, the deal was completed on 6 July, with Miami receiving Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis while Milwaukee took Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-rounder. That is a significant outlay of young talent and scoring, and it places more responsibility on the remaining rotation players to fill the gaps.

  • Arrivals: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis and Klay Thompson.
  • Departures in the trade: Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakučionis, plus draft picks.
  • Continuity: Adebayo, Wiggins and a development group including Pelle Larsson.
  • Coaching: Spoelstra, one of the league’s most respected tacticians.

The Knicks as the benchmark

Antetokounmpo was generous when asked about the competition. He called the defending champion New York Knicks the best team in the league right now and praised Jalen Brunson, while adding that Miami plan to do their own job and see where it takes them. The Eastern Conference has become crowded at the top, with Philadelphia also adding LeBron James.

“The goal is to win a championship. That’s the goal,” Antetokounmpo said at media day. “Succeed or fail, I’m going to fail by working or succeed by working.” It is a philosophy that should resonate in a Heat organisation that has long prided itself on preparation and accountability.

What to watch

The first weeks will reveal how quickly the new-look Heat come together. Miami open their preseason in Canada, facing Toronto in Quebec City on 3 October as part of the NBA Canada Games, before returning to finalise the rotation for opening night later in the month.

For Malaysian fans, Antetokounmpo’s move is one of the most compelling stories of the season. His rise from a raw prospect to a two-time MVP and champion has made him one of the league’s most admired players internationally, and seeing him in a Heat jersey will take some getting used to.

The expectations are enormous. Miami have gone all in, and Antetokounmpo has embraced the pressure. His media day comments suggest he understands exactly what is required, and that he is ready to measure his time in Miami by the only standard he says matters: winning.

The trade also marked the end of an era in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo delivered the Bucks a championship in 2021 and spent more than a decade as the face of the franchise. His departure means that, for the first time since his rookie season, a new generation of Bucks players will be building without him.

There will be moments of friction along the way. New teammates must learn his preferred spots on the floor, and Antetokounmpo must adjust to a system that asks for more ball movement than he may be used to. Spoelstra’s track record suggests he will find solutions, but the process will be closely watched from the first preseason game.
