The Golden State Warriors began their season with an unwelcome surprise. On Monday, 28 September, general manager Mike Dunleavy announced that centre Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely with an unspecified health issue and will not travel with the team to training camp in Hawaii.

According to NBA.com, Dunleavy said the organisation had only been informed on Sunday, and that Porzingis had been working out with the team without any problems the previous week. “He was in last week, doing well and everything,” Dunleavy said. “I don’t have a timeline on it.”

What the Warriors said

Dunleavy was careful not to describe the situation as a long-term concern. NBC Sports reported that he said he was “not marking him down as being out to start the season or anything like that”, adding: “He’s just not available this week.” He expressed hope that Porzingis would return soon.

Head coach Steve Kerr called the news “surprising” but remained optimistic, according to NBA.com. “We fully expect him to be with us at some point,” Kerr said. “There’s not a whole lot to report at this time.” The Warriors did not release details of the health issue.

  • Status: out indefinitely with an unspecified health issue.
  • Camp: will not travel with the team to Hawaii.
  • Timeline: none given, but not ruled out of the season opener.
  • Contract: re-signed on a two-year, $40 million deal this summer.
  • Opener: Golden State face the Lakers on 21 October, according to NBA.com.

A recurring concern

Porzingis’ health has been a talking point for some time. NBC Sports noted that he has been managing Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, known as POTS, for several seasons. The condition causes a person’s heart rate to rise sharply after standing up. The report stressed that it is unclear whether the current issue is related.

The Warriors acquired the 31-year-old Latvian from the Atlanta Hawks at last season’s trade deadline in February, but he appeared in only 15 games for Golden State. Despite that limited availability, the franchise re-signed him to a two-year, $40 million contract, a clear sign of how much they value his skill set when he is fit.

Why Porzingis matters to Golden State

Porzingis offers a rare combination for a centre. He can protect the rim and also shoot from three-point range, which pulls opposing big men away from the basket. NBC Sports described him as crucial to the Warriors’ five-out offensive scheme, in which all five players on the floor are capable of spacing the court.

That spacing is particularly valuable around Stephen Curry. When the opposing centre has to follow Porzingis to the perimeter, driving lanes open and help defence becomes harder to organise. Without him, the Warriors must either play a more traditional big man or go smaller, each of which carries trade-offs.

  • Spacing: his shooting pulls rim protectors away from the basket.
  • Rim protection: size and length on the defensive end.
  • Pick-and-pop: a natural partner for Curry’s off-ball movement.
  • Mismatch potential: few centres can defend him on the perimeter.

Injuries mounting before camp

The Porzingis news compounds other concerns. NBC Sports reported that Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are progressing in their recoveries from knee injuries but are still expected to miss the start of the season. For a veteran team, that is a worrying set of absences before a single practice has taken place.

Curry summed up the situation. “We have a veteran team. We need health on our side,” he said, according to NBC Sports. The 38-year-old has just agreed a two-year, $116 million extension that would take him to a 20th season with the franchise, and the Warriors’ chances depend on keeping enough of their core available around him.

NBC Sports also reported that Curry walked away from the media day podium when told that pundits did not expect Golden State to make the playoffs. The reaction reflected a group aware of the doubts around it, and determined to prove them wrong. Injuries, however, make that task harder.

What happens next

The immediate impact is on training camp. Coaches use the early weeks to install schemes and test combinations, and Porzingis’ absence limits Kerr’s ability to experiment with the lineups built around him. Other big men will receive extra repetitions, which could help depth later in the season.

Beyond that, the key variable is time. If the issue resolves quickly, Porzingis may be available for part of the preseason and ready for the 21 October opener against the Lakers. If it lingers, the Warriors will need to adjust their plans for the early weeks of the regular season.

For fans in Malaysia and across Asia who follow the Warriors, the news is a reminder of how fragile a veteran roster can be. The Warriors remain one of the most popular teams in the region, and their early-season fortunes will depend heavily on how quickly their injured players return.

The Warriors have been in this position before. Their championship years were built on continuity and chemistry, and they have repeatedly found ways to cope with setbacks. The coming weeks will test that resilience again, with the organisation hoping that Dunleavy’s optimism about a short absence proves correct.

Depth will be tested in other ways too. When several rotation players are unavailable at once, coaches often have to give minutes to younger or less experienced players earlier than planned. That can reveal useful contributors, but it also increases the load on the veterans who are healthy, including Curry, whose minutes the Warriors will want to manage carefully across a long season.

The medical side deserves patience. Health issues that are not orthopaedic injuries can be harder to predict, and teams are understandably cautious about sharing details. Until Golden State provide an update, any projection about Porzingis’ return date would be guesswork.

There is also a longer-term consideration. Golden State committed $40 million to Porzingis knowing his availability was uncertain, a calculated gamble that his talent justified the risk. How often he plays this season will shape the verdict on that decision, and it will influence how the front office approaches its roster plans around Curry for the remaining years of his new contract.
