The Detroit Pistons will be without Jalen Duren for at least the next two weeks. The team announced on Sunday, 25 October, that its All-Star centre has a right hamstring strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Duren was hurt in the second quarter of Friday’s 128-111 win over the Miami Heat and played only 10 minutes, making two of his four shots and grabbing six rebounds before leaving the game.

The timing is awkward for player and club. Duren missed the start of training camp during a contract standoff before agreeing a five-year extension reported to be worth $200 million, and he had started both of Detroit’s opening games. He was averaging 13.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists when the injury struck. Flashscore reported that the absence means he will miss at least six games, including two against the Philadelphia 76ers and one against the defending champion New York Knicks.

What the Pistons announced

Detroit’s statement was short and specific. The club described the problem as a right hamstring strain and gave a re-evaluation window rather than a return date. That wording matters. A re-evaluation after two weeks is not a promise that Duren will play again at that point; it is the moment at which the medical staff will decide whether he is ready to ramp up, needs more time or can return straight away. Hamstring strains are notoriously easy to aggravate, especially for a big man whose game is built on explosive vertical movement, so teams tend to be conservative.

  • Injury: right hamstring strain, suffered in the second quarter against Miami on Friday, 23 October.
  • Announcement: Sunday, 25 October, with a re-evaluation set for two weeks later.
  • Minutes before leaving: 10, with 2-of-4 shooting and six rebounds.
  • Season averages so far: 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in two starts.
  • Games likely missed, according to Flashscore: at least six, including two with Philadelphia and one with New York.

Field Level Media also noted that Duren’s 2025-26 season was the best of his career. He averaged a career-best 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, made his first All-Star team and earned a place on the All-NBA third team. His playoff numbers were more modest, at 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds across 14 games, and Detroit’s run as the Eastern Conference’s top seed ended in the second round.

A strong start interrupted

Duren’s opening night showed why Detroit was willing to commit so much money to him. In the 121-113 comeback win over the Boston Celtics on 20 October, he scored 22 points and took nine rebounds, matching Cade Cunningham as the joint top scorer for the Pistons. His three-point play was part of the 23-0 fourth-quarter run that turned a game Boston had led by 22 points. It was the kind of performance that made the contract standoff look like a negotiating detail rather than a fundamental disagreement.

The second game was quieter. Duren’s season average of 13.0 points after two outings means he managed only four points against Miami before leaving, and the injury meant he never had the chance to settle into that one. Detroit still won comfortably, which says something about the depth around him, but a full stretch without its starting centre will test the rotation in a different way.

How Detroit can cope

The Pistons do not need to reinvent themselves without Duren, but they do lose specific things. He is their main lob threat, their most reliable offensive rebounder and the player whose screening frees Cunningham to attack downhill. Opposing defences can now spend more attention on Cunningham’s drives, and Detroit will have to generate easy baskets in other ways, whether through transition, cutting or perimeter shooting.

The opening week offered some encouragement on that front. Javonte Green scored 19 points off the bench against Boston, including five three-pointers, and Duncan Robinson added 21 with 5-of-9 shooting from deep. Ausar Thompson, who signed his own five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension before the 19 October deadline, posted 11 points and 11 rebounds in that game. A smaller, more mobile lineup built around Thompson’s defence and Robinson’s shooting could become more prominent in the coming fortnight.

  • Cunningham will likely need to carry even more of the creation load without Duren’s screens and rolls.
  • Rebounding becomes a collective job, with Ausar Thompson an obvious candidate to crash the glass.
  • Shooters such as Robinson and Green can space the floor if Detroit goes smaller.
  • The schedule includes meetings with Philadelphia and New York, two Eastern Conference contenders.

The contract context

Duren’s path to Detroit has always been unusual. Field Level Media recalled that the Charlotte Hornets drafted him 13th overall in 2022, that he was traded to the Knicks on draft night and that he arrived in Detroit two weeks later. Still only 22, he has averaged 13.5 points and 10.3 rebounds across 278 games, 241 of them starts. That combination of youth and production is why the Pistons ultimately paid him, even after a tense pre-season in which he missed the start of camp.

Injuries early in a long contract do not change its value, but they do shape the narrative around it. The positive reading is that a hamstring strain caught early, with a clear re-evaluation point, is usually manageable. The more cautious reading is that hamstring problems can linger if a player comes back too quickly. Detroit’s medical staff will be aware that the important part of the season comes much later than early November.

What to watch next

The next update should come around the two-week mark, roughly 8 November. Until then, the Pistons’ results against Philadelphia and New York will give an early indication of how well the group functions without its starting centre. For fans in Malaysia, most of Detroit’s home games tip off in the early morning, between about 7 and 8:30 a.m. local time, so the matches that answer that question will arrive with breakfast.

Detroit has started the season strongly enough to absorb a short absence. The bigger question is whether this is a brief interruption or the start of a recurring problem, and that will only become clear once Duren is cleared and back on the floor at full speed. For now, the Pistons will rely on Cunningham, the Thompson-led defence and a deeper bench than many expected to keep their early momentum going.
