The deadline for players from the 2023 draft to sign rookie-scale extensions passed at 6 p.m. Eastern on Monday, 19 October, which was 6 a.m. on Tuesday in Malaysia. Seven players agreed new deals before it, all of them five-year contracts, led by San Antonio Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama. Everyone else from the first round who remained eligible will now play out the final year of his rookie contract and become a restricted free agent in 2027, unless released.

Hoops Rumors noted that seven extensions is the lowest total since 2018, and that Wembanyama was the only player to receive a maximum deal, the first time since 2016 that a class has not produced multiple max rookie extensions. That is partly a reflection of the league’s tighter financial rules, which have made teams more cautious about committing large sums years in advance.

The seven extensions

  • Victor Wembanyama, Spurs (No. 1 pick): five-year maximum extension, projected by Hoops Rumors at about $255.2 million.
  • Brandon Miller, Hornets (No. 2): five years, about $209 million.
  • Amen Thompson, Rockets (No. 4): five years, $208 million.
  • Keyonte George, Jazz (No. 16): five years, reported at $155 million to $157.5 million including incentives.
  • Ausar Thompson, Pistons (No. 5): five years, $155 million.
  • Cason Wallace, Thunder (No. 10): five years, reported at $135 million to $139 million.
  • Brandin Podziemski, Warriors (No. 19): five years, $110 million.

NBA.com stressed that all of the contract terms are as reported, and the published figures vary slightly between outlets. The exact value of Wembanyama’s contract depends on the salary cap in future seasons. Hoops Rumors reported that his deal includes a player option in the fifth year and a 15 percent trade kicker, and that he declined so-called Rose Rule language that could have raised its value to around $306 million had he earned All-NBA honours this season.

Details behind the deals

Several of the contracts include structural features worth noting. Amen Thompson’s extension has a 10 percent trade kicker, according to Hoops Rumors. Keyonte George’s deal includes $2.5 million in incentives, which explains why some outlets reported $155 million and others $157.5 million. Cason Wallace’s contract reportedly includes $4 million in incentives, and Brandin Podziemski’s includes a fifth-year option and a modest trade kicker.

The Thompson twins make a neat pairing. Amen in Houston and Ausar in Detroit have now each committed five more years to the clubs that drafted them, and both appear central to their teams’ plans. Amen’s deal is significantly larger, reflecting his role as a starter and playmaker in Houston, while Ausar’s defensive value underpins a Pistons team that topped the Eastern Conference last season.

Who did not sign

Hoops Rumors listed 14 players who will enter contract years: Anthony Black, Noah Clowney, Bilal Coulibaly, Gradey Dick, Scoot Henderson, Taylor Hendricks, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Dereck Lively II, Kris Murray, Marcus Sasser, Brice Sensabaugh, Ben Sheppard, Julian Strawther and Jarace Walker. Cam Whitmore and Jordan Hawkins had been waived. The outlet suggested that Black and Jaquez are the safest bets for lucrative deals next summer, with Coulibaly, Henderson and Lively also capable of strong markets if healthy.

Black’s case is the most interesting. Spectrum News 13 reported that he is the first player drafted under Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman to reach this stage without an extension. Weltman had said on media day: “We believe he’s a bright young player in this league who’s just going to get better and better,” adding, “But if not, we expect Anthony to have a great year.” Orlando sits just under the second apron this season and already has about $193 million committed to eight players next season.

  • Players without extensions become restricted free agents in July 2027 if they finish their contracts.
  • Their teams can make qualifying offers to retain the right to match outside offers.
  • Black averaged 15 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 64 games last season.
  • Lively is recovering from foot surgery and Strawther from a knee sprain, according to Hoops Rumors.

What it means

Rookie-scale extensions are usually where teams lock in their young cores before those players reach the open market. The small number this year suggests that clubs are increasingly willing to let the restricted free agency process set prices, rather than paying a premium in advance. For players, betting on themselves can pay off handsomely, but it also exposes them to injury risk and a tighter market.

For the extended players, the pressure shifts from negotiation to performance. Wembanyama opens the season against Oklahoma City in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals, the Thompson twins both begin with high-profile games in opening week, and George and Podziemski will be expected to justify mid-tier deals that their clubs see as long-term value. None of the contracts takes effect until 2027-28, but the narrative around each will start immediately.

For the 14 players who did not sign, the 2026-27 season becomes an extended audition. Their performances over the next few months will shape some of the most important contract decisions of the 2027 offseason, and for teams like Orlando, the outcome will help define how they balance talent and payroll for years to come.

How to read the next chapter

The first step in reading Seven 2023 Draft Picks Sign Rookie-Scale Extensions by Deadline is to separate the confirmed event from what it may mean for the rest of the season. One game, injury update or contract decision can change a team's immediate options, but it rarely settles a longer trend. Look at the official game book or team announcement for the event itself, then compare it with the wider schedule and the players actually available. Early-season numbers are particularly sensitive to small samples: a high shooting percentage over two games says less than the quality and type of the shots that created it.

Lineups are the most practical follow-up. A team can lose a scorer yet improve defensively with a different five, or win one night while a weak bench rotation remains unresolved. Watch how the coach distributes minutes, which players close each half and who handles the ball when the first option is denied. In the case of Seven 2023 Draft Picks Sign Rookie-Scale Extensions by Deadline, those details will show whether the immediate headline translates into a stable change. They are questions to test in subsequent games, not claims that a specific rotation has already been chosen.
