The New York Knicks are no longer chasing a championship; they are defending one. At media day on 28 September, the franchise that ended a 53-year title drought last season returned to work with a clear message from head coach Mike Brown: the standard that won the title cannot slip.

The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals, with Jalen Brunson named Finals MVP. According to ABC7 New York, they went 16-3 in the postseason. With the regular season opening on 20 October, the champions now face a very different kind of pressure.

Brunson recovered from wrist surgery

The most important update concerned Brunson’s health. The Finals MVP played through a left wrist injury during the title run and had surgery afterwards. “It was painful,” he admitted, according to NBA.com, before adding: “I feel good.” He described the break as “the longest, shortest summer ever, but it was well worth it.”

Brunson also spoke about the need to move on from last season’s success. “We just have to find a way to turn the page and move on,” he said, according to ABC7. It is a familiar challenge for champions: the celebrations are over, and rivals have spent the summer preparing to take the crown.

Extension talks remain unresolved

Several key players are still waiting on new contracts. Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart and Miles “Deuce” McBride all said they want extensions, but none has a deal. NBA.com reported that Towns is eligible for an extension worth up to $272 million, and the forward did not hide his feelings about the uncertainty.

“I think in this situation there’s no comfortability to be had,” Towns said. NBA.com noted that Brunson’s below-market 2024 extension may be complicating negotiations, as it set a benchmark within the locker room. Hart acknowledged that uncertainty can weigh on players but insisted he remains committed to the team.

  • Karl-Anthony Towns: eligible for up to $272 million; no deal yet.
  • Josh Hart: wants an extension and says he remains committed.
  • Deuce McBride: also seeking a new contract.
  • Context: Brunson’s team-friendly 2024 extension has shaped the conversation.
  • Deadline: veteran and rookie-scale extensions must be agreed by 19 October, according to Hoops Rumors.

Replacing Mitchell Robinson

The biggest roster change is at backup centre. Mitchell Robinson left to join the Boston Celtics on a three-year, $47 million deal, according to NBA.com, taking his elite offensive rebounding and rim protection with him. The Knicks have signed veteran Andre Drummond to fill the role.

Towns praised the addition, calling Drummond “one of the best rebounders of our generation”. Rebounding was a significant part of New York’s identity under Tom Thibodeau and has remained central under Brown, so Drummond’s ability to control the glass could help preserve that edge.

Brown’s second-year challenge

Mike Brown now faces the task of following a championship season. NBA.com reviewed his previous second years as a head coach and found mixed results: one produced a Finals appearance with Cleveland, while others were less successful. His warning to the players reflected that history. According to ABC7, Brown emphasised that the team faces new obstacles this season.

The Eastern Conference has also become more competitive. Philadelphia added LeBron James to a roster that already included Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, while Miami acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo. Both of those teams will be targeting the Knicks from the start.

  • Philadelphia: LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.
  • Miami: Giannis Antetokounmpo alongside Bam Adebayo, with Klay Thompson added.
  • Detroit: the East’s top seed last season, though Jalen Duren’s contract was unresolved at camp.
  • Boston: added Mitchell Robinson, alongside Paul George and Mike Conley.

Lighter moments

Media day was not all serious. NBA.com reported that the practice facility suffered a power outage mid-session, leaving Hart answering questions in darkness. Towns also shared a story from his honeymoon in Africa, recalling that tourists in the Serengeti shouted “Knicks in 5!” at him, according to ABC7, a sign of how far the celebrations had travelled.

Those moments reflected a relaxed group, comfortable with each other after a historic season. Chemistry was one of the Knicks’ strengths during the title run, and the returning core gives them continuity that newly assembled rivals cannot match.

Opening night against the 76ers

The schedule has delivered a marquee opener. According to the NBA’s key dates, the Knicks host the 76ers at Madison Square Garden at 7pm ET on 20 October, which is 7am on 21 October in Malaysia. It will be New York’s first regular-season game as champions, and one of the most anticipated fixtures of the opening week.

That game offers an early test against one of the teams most determined to dethrone them. It also puts Brunson and James on the same court on the season’s first night, a meeting that should draw a global audience.

For Malaysian Knicks supporters, the title defence is a chance to enjoy a team that has finally delivered after decades of frustration. The challenge now is to prove that last season was the start of something lasting, rather than a single remarkable run.

The next few weeks should clarify the contract situations of Towns, Hart and McBride, and show how well Drummond fits in Robinson’s role. If the Knicks can resolve those questions while keeping their chemistry intact, they will enter opening night as the team everyone else is chasing.

History shows how difficult repeating can be. Many champions have found that the energy required for a deep playoff run carries over into the following season, leaving players physically and mentally drained. A shorter summer, like the one Brunson described, gives less time to recover, which is why managing workloads in the early months will be important.

The Knicks do have advantages. Their core players know each other’s habits, their coach has now been through a full championship campaign with them, and Madison Square Garden will be one of the league’s most demanding venues for visiting teams. Those factors will not guarantee another title, but they give New York a solid platform.

Defending a title is rarely straightforward. Opponents raise their level against the champions, injuries accumulate, and complacency is a constant risk. Brown’s insistence on avoiding any slippage reflects that reality, and the Knicks’ response to his message will define their season.
